About this programme
The BSc (Hons) Computer System Network Engineering (Top-Up) is an advanced undergraduate degree programme designed for learners who wish to develop specialist expertise in computer networking, infrastructure management, and emerging digital technologies. The programme builds upon existing knowledge in computing and networking, preparing graduates for professional careers in network engineering, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and IT systems management.
The curriculum covers advanced network design, cybersecurity principles, cryptography, cloud and edge networking, artificial intelligence applications in network systems, blockchain technologies for network security, and wireless and mobile communication technologies. Through a combination of theoretical study, practical application, and independent research, students develop the ability to analyse complex networking challenges and implement innovative technology solutions.
The Research Project/Dissertation module enables students to investigate a specialist area within networking technologies, applying research methodologies, critical analysis, and problem-solving skills to real-world challenges.
Graduates will gain the technical expertise required to design, implement, optimise, and secure enterprise-level network systems while developing professional skills essential for the rapidly evolving IT industry.
What you will learn
1. Design and Manage Advanced Network Infrastructures
Students will develop the ability to design, implement, and evaluate complex network architectures using modern networking principles and technologies. They will understand how to build scalable, reliable, and efficient enterprise networks.
2. Apply Cybersecurity and Cryptographic Techniques
Students will understand cybersecurity concepts, security frameworks, and cryptographic methods used to protect network infrastructure, data, and communication systems against modern cyber threats.
3. Develop Cloud and Edge Networking Solutions
Students will gain knowledge of cloud computing environments, edge technologies, virtualization, and distributed networking models. They will learn how to design efficient and secure cloud-based infrastructure solutions.
4. Apply Artificial Intelligence in Network Systems
Students will explore how AI technologies can support network automation, performance monitoring, optimisation, and intelligent decision-making within modern IT infrastructures.
5. Understand Blockchain Applications for Network Security
Students will evaluate blockchain technologies and their applications in improving data integrity, authentication, transparency, and security within network environments.
6. Design and Manage Wireless and Mobile Networks
Students will develop knowledge of wireless communication technologies, mobile networking standards, wireless security mechanisms, and network performance optimisation.
7. Conduct Independent Research and Technical Investigation
Students will develop advanced research skills by investigating a specialised networking topic, applying appropriate research methods, analysing findings, and presenting professional conclusions.
Entry requirements
A recognised Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) in Networking, Computing, Information Technology, Cyber Security, or a related discipline.
A Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation Degree, or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject.
Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with the awarding institution's admission requirements.
